Google Friends Newsletter - June 2011

Hello Google Friends. We hope you enjoy this month's update on our
newest products and services.

------------
POWER TIP

Voice Search on Desktop

You can now speak your web searches instead of typing them by clicking
on the microphone icon on the right side of the search box. This can
be particularly useful for hard-to-spell searches like [spaghetti with
bolognese sauce] or complex searches like [translate to spanish where
can I buy a hamburger]. Voice Search is currently available for Chrome
users in U.S. English only.

NEW PRODUCTS & UPDATES

Search by Image

You now have the option of searching with a photo instead of words at
images.google.com. Click the camera icon in the search box and upload
a photo from your computer or paste the URL of an image from the web.
You can also drag and drop pictures from websites or your computer
into the search box. You'll get relevant results about your image as
well as similar images or the same image in different sizes or
resolutions.
http://www.google.com/insidesearch/searchbyimage.html

New Mobile Search features

Discovering places nearby just got easier with new shortcuts for
commonly searched local categories, like restaurants, coffee shops and
bars on the Google mobile homepage. You can also now add suggested
phrases to the search box and "build" longer, more complex searches
piece by piece. These features are available on www.google.com from
the mobile browser for Android (2.2+) and iOS (4.0+) devices.

My Places on Google Maps

Keeping track of all the locations you care about and memorizing which
places you starred or rated isn't easy. To help, we released the new
My Places tab on Google Maps, which helps you quickly view and
interact with your saved maps, starred locations and rated businesses.
The My Places tab replaces the My Maps tab in the Google Maps toolbar.

Inside Search

We recently launched Inside Search, a one-stop shop for all search-
related features, tips and tricks. Whether you're a beginner to web
search or a search master, you'll find all the search shortcuts you
need under the Features section of the site. You can also use the
under-the-hood section to get a look at the technology behind Google
Search. There are interactive diagrams with information on how far
every query has to travel to get an answer back to you, how often we
run experiments (we ran over 6000 in 2010 alone), how much time has
gone into developing the algorithm and more.

MISCELLANY

So much for a sleepy summer—this June we made several big
announcements. We added the +1 button to websites so you can recommend
content all across the web. We broke all previous Doodle records with
our playable guitar doodle in honor of Les Paul. Chromebooks went on
sale to the public and we announced a series of design improvements
across all our products, including Google Search, Google Maps and
Gmail, taking place over the next few months. Finally, we launched
Google+, a project that brings the nuance and richness of real-life
sharing to the web. Currently, Google+ is in an invitation-only field
trial but we hope when you're invite arrives, you'll choose to join
the project.

MISCELLANY

May was a month for doing good and giving recognition. We held a
Google Map Maker event at the World Bank to help accurately map the
future Republic of South Sudan, and with the Newseum, launched a
YouTube channel to honor journalists who have lost their lives
covering war zones and conflict areas. We awarded 65 young women with
Google Anita Borg Memorial scholarships and crowned seven-year old
Matteo Lopez from South San Francisco, Calif., the U.S. 2011 Doodle 4
Google winner. Finally, our own distinguished engineer Ken Thompson
was awarded the prestigious Japan Prize at a ceremony at our
headquarters.

POWER TIP

Google Map Maker

If you're in the U.S., you can now add your expert local knowledge to
Google Maps with Google Map Maker for the United States. For example,
you can get started by adding the outline of the soccer field at your
local park, or marking that a local two-way street recently changed to
a one-way thoroughfare. Each edit in Map Maker is reviewed, and after
approval, will appear in Google Maps within minutes. Using Map Maker,
people have built out and edited the maps for 183 countries and
regions around the world; now you can ensure the places you care about
in the U.S. are richly represented on the map.

NEW PRODUCTS & UPDATES

Google Toolbar 7

The speed of Google Instant is now available in the latest version of
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer 8 and 9. Once you enable Instant
under "Toolbar Options," you'll see search predictions and results
appear as you type in the Toolbar search box. The new Toolbar is also
cleaner looking and more personalized, showing you only the tools you
use the most. And it's one of the fastest add-ons you can use in
Internet Explorer, so it won't slow down your browser. If you're
already using Toolbar, you'll be automatically updated to the new
version over the next few weeks.

A Google a Day

A Google a Day is a new daily puzzle that can be solved using your
creativity and clever search skills on Google. Questions will be
posted every day at agoogleaday.com and printed on weekdays above the
New York Times crossword puzzle. To check your answers—or if you're
stumped—you can choose to look at each puzzle's answer, along with the
search tips and features used to find it.

Google Offers

Google Offers helps you discover the best of your city at 50% off or
more. If you're in Portland, New York City or the San Francisco Bay
Area, you can sign up now to start receiving offers when we launch in
these cities soon. You can also submit your information to get news on
when Offers is coming to your area.

Pagination and better printing for documents

Google Docs now features pagination—the ability to see your document
broken up into pages. That means other Docs features work better, too:
headers now show up at the top of each page, manual page breaks move
text onto a new page and footnotes appear at the bottom of the pages
themselves. Thanks to pagination, we also made document printing a
whole lot better in Chrome: you can print directly from the browser's
"File" menu, and what you see in your browser is exactly what you'll
get on paper.

With Earth Day and U.S. Arbor Day both falling in the month of April,
we focused a lot on green efforts this month. We signed a power
purchase agreement with a wind energy facility in Oklahoma (which
we'll be applying to our Mayes County, Okla. data center) and invested
about $100 million in the Shepherds Flat Wind Farm in Oregon,
anticipated to be the largest wind farm in the world. We also invested
$168 million in a solar energy power plant in the Mojave Desert in
California and partnered with the Save the Redwoods League in an
effort to protect some of the country's oldest forests. Finally, on
Earth Day, we celebrated with a special animated Google doodle.

Hide sites to find more of what you want

If you're signed in to Google, now you can block a specific website
from appearing in your future search results. When you click a result
and then return to the search results page, you'll find a new link
under that result that reads "Block all example.com results." Once
you've blocked a domain, you won't see it in your future search
results. You can always see your blocked sites and unblock sites by
visiting your Search Settings or clicking on the "Manage blocked
sites" link that appears when you block a domain.

Introducing the +1 button

+1's are a new, quick way in Google search to say "This is something
you should check out." Click the +1 button to publicly give something
your stamp of approval, helping your friends and contacts find the
best stuff when they search. +1's can also help you out by showing you
the right recommendations on the topics you're interested in, right
when you want them—in your search results. +1's are slowing rolling
out alongside search results and ads in English on Google.com, but in
the future they'll appear in many more places (including other Google
products and sites across the web). You can try the +1 button by
opting in at: http://www.google.com/experimental

Google Maps Navigation routes you around traffic

Google Maps Navigation (Beta) will now automatically route you around
traffic. To use it, just start Navigation like you normally would,
either from the Navigation app or from within Google Maps. Our routing
algorithms will apply our knowledge of current and historical traffic
to select the fastest possible route. That means that Navigation will
automatically guide you along the best route given the current traffic
conditions.

Instant Previews for mobile

Similar to the desktop version, Instant Previews for mobile displays
search results in the form of webpage snapshots, so you can visually
compare results without having to go back and forth between websites
and search results. To use Instant Previews on your mobile device, go
to www.google.com and tap on the magnifying glass next to any search
result. You can quickly scroll across previews by swiping with your
finger and when you find one you like, tap on the preview to go
straight to the page.

Discussions in Google Docs

Comments in Google Docs now facilitate rapid and seamless discussions.
Each comment has a timestamp and profile picture, so you can see who
made a comment and when. You can also resolve comments, rather than
deleting them, so you have a record of what's been said. Plus,
comments are now integrated with email to make it even faster to
communicate—you'll get updates from a given discussion in your inbox,
and you can reply to the email to make a comment in the doc.

Block sites from Google's search results

This early, experimental Chrome extension lets you block sites from
your web search results. Once you block a site, you won't see results
from that domain again in your results (you can always revoke a
blocked site at the bottom of the results page). The extension also
sends blocked site information to Google, and we will study the
resulting feedback and explore using it as a potential ranking signal
for our search results. If you're a tech-savvy Chrome user, download

Update to Google Social Search

Now when signed in to your Google account, you'll see results and
shared links from people you're connected to on Twitter, Flickr,
Blogger, and other publicly available sites—blended through the search
results page. The names and profile photos of the people who shared
or published this information will appear underneath the results. In
addition, you now have more control over how you connect your accounts—
either publicly or privately. As always, you'll only get social search
results when you choose to log in to your Google Account.

Click on the "Recipes" link in the left-hand panel on the search
results page to narrow your search results to show only recipes, along
with helpful information like ratings, ingredients and pictures. You
can search for specific recipes like [chocolate chip cookies], or more
open-ended topics—like ingredients, holidays or favorite chefs. You
can also use the tools on the left-hand side of the page to filter
recipe search results based on your ideal ingredients, cook time and
calorie count, so it's easier to choose the right recipe for you.

It's now easier to find and get updates from Google through whatever
channel you like best, whether it's a blog, Twitter account, Facebook
page or YouTube video. We've updated our blog and Twitter directories,
and added new directories for Google's official Facebook pages and
YouTube channels. You can filter by category, language or region so
you can easily find exactly what you're looking for. Find all these
directories in the U.S. Press Center.
